Here at Colorado Smiles we have a fantastic hygienist. And she has been very well-trained in dealing with our periodontal health, which is the health of the gums and the bones surrounding our teeth. Recently 1 of my 3 remaining real teeth broke and I had a cavity. NO JOKE! I didn’t feel a thing. Dr. Aimee placed a pad with some unknown anesthesia on it before the shot to numb me. Didn’t feel the shot. The only pain I had was from my chapped lips and she noticed me twitch and she placed Vaseline on my lips. She can have all my dental money for the rest of my life. She’s goood!

Gum disease can be treated in a variety of ways, but the most conservative method is with a deep cleaning known as scaling and root planing. This is where your dentist or hygienist removes infection caused by bacterial plaque below and around your gumline and then smooths out your tooth roots so bacteria doesn’t return. Advanced gum disease may require other procedures to rebuild recessed tissue, like grafting, to prevent tooth and bone loss.
Gum disease, also called periodontal disease, is an infection caused by bacteria in your mouth. Bacteria form a clear, sticky film called plaque that builds up around your gumline, leading to inflamed and infected gums. Left untreated, the infection causes your gums to separate from teeth, creating “pockets” where more bacteria accumulate. In advanced stages of gum disease, the infection spreads from your gums to the bone that supports your teeth. Your teeth will loosen and possibly fall out.
